Nos. 42 to 52 St. Augustine's Street, which includes No. 1 Sussex Street, is a group of shops with flats above, dating from the early 19th century. The building is constructed of red brick and features a pantile roof. It stands three storeys high and has seven irregularly spaced windows on the second floor. There are three long shopfronts: No. 42, located on a corner site, has paired plain pilasters and an architrave; Nos. 44 and 48 have off-centre doors with reeded end-pilasters and a plain wide architrave; and No. 52 has a small shopfront with a right-hand glazed door, flanked by pilasters and a shop window, as well as a dentil cornice architrave. The first floor features sash windows with glazing bars and segmental arches, while the second floor has sash windows beneath a box cornice. The building has a hipped roof at the south-east corner.
