Description

Nos 31 to 41 Sussex Place is a terraced house with shops, built around 1835-1840, possibly by George Gutch. The building features stucco exterior and slate roofs, rising three storeys with an attic storey at Nos 35 and 37. Each front is two windows wide, with Nos 35 and 37, and Nos 39 and 41 designed as single fronts. The fronts of Nos 35 and 37 curve outward in a quadrant shape due to the narrowing of the street. The ground floor has early 20th-century shop fronts, and there is a doorway with a dentil cornice, flanked by piers, at Nos 35 and 37. A deep fascia and block cornice run continuously across the ground floor. The upper floors feature recessed glazing bar sash windows with slightly projecting lintels that have dropped ears on either side. There are deep sill bands, a cornice, and a blocking course, while the attic storey of Nos 35 and 37 is topped with a crowning cornice and blocking course.
