Description

TQ 2681 SE CITY OF WESTMINSTER SUSSEX GARDENS, W2 52/25 (north-west side) 10.4.75 Nos 168 to 174 (even) GV II Terrace. Mid C19. Brown brick in Flemish bond, No 168 painted, with channelled stucco ground floor (plain to No 170). Stucco dressings. 4 storeys and basement, attic to No 168. Nos 170-174 2 bays each. No 168 2 bays to Sussex Gardens, 5 bays to London Street. No 168: quoins, entrance to London Street has porch with cornice on consoles. Nos 170-174 have projecting Tuscan porches and tripartite sashes. First floor: stucco balcony. Round-arched sashes in pilastered surrounds with pediments on consoles, keystones and panelled spandrels. Above: elliptical-arched sashes in keyed architraves, pilasters, hood on consoles and panelled spandrels to 2nd floor windows. No 168: upper windows of Sussex Gardens front in triple groups. Modillion cornice. Iron basement railings. Sussex Gardens, known originally as Grand Junction Road, formed an important feature of the original layout of Bayswater.
