Description

These are two late 18th-century houses located on the southwest side of St. Augustine’s Street. The buildings incorporate remains of a 15th-century timber-framed structure. They are constructed of red brick with timber spacers and have a pantile roof. The houses are two storeys high and have four bays each.

At No. 22, the left-hand door is offset and partly glazed. There is a shop window with simple pilasters, an architrave, and glazing bars. Two small casement windows are located at the first floor level. At No. 24, the right-hand door is also partly glazed and features fluted pilasters, an architrave, and a flat hood. There are two small casement windows at the first floor.

The remaining 15th-century structure includes large wall-posts of one truss rising to wall-plate level, mortices for windbraces running from the posts to the wall-plate, and evidence of a single-storey aisle at the rear. Two crude posts rising from the tie-beam represent remnants of a queen-post roof. This is the only surviving example in Norwich of a building that was once fully timber-framed.
