Description

This is a terrace of cottages with a carriage arch at the west end, known as "Temple Bar", originally the south entrance to Heacham Hall Park. The cottages date from the early 18th century. They are built of carstone with brick dressings, and have red pantiled roofs.

Archway Cottage, at the west end, features an off-centre, rounded carriage arch. Behind the cottages are two semi-octagonal early 19th century brick piers, decorated with lotus-leaf finials. The cottages have three ground-floor casement windows from the 20th century, along with two wedge-roofed dormers with casement windows. A stack is located on the west end, and a lower wing is attached to the west side.

Number 42 has two ground-floor casement windows with glazing bars, set beneath red brick arches dressed with black brick, and two gabled attic dormers with casement windows and glazing bars. It also has a boarded door. Number 44 has one ground-floor casement window with glazing bars, one wedge-roofed attic dormer with a casement window and glazing bars, and a boarded door with a wooden porch. Number 46 contains three ground-floor casement windows with glazing bars displayed under soldier arches. It also has two attic dormers with glazing bars under wedge roofs. Two ridge stacks are present. The east end has a brick coped gable.

The terrace has group value, being a significant example of early 18th century architecture with later additions.
