Description
The churchyard wall surrounding the Church of St. Mary in Heacham includes a war memorial and dates from the 18th century. The wall runs along the south side of Church Lane and the west side of Hunstanton Road. It is constructed from rubble, squared and coursed carstone and clunch, with brick stitching, infill, and dressings.
The war memorial, dedicated to those who served in the 1914-1918 war, was created around 1918. It is made of carstone with stone dressings and features a triangular plan with steps leading up to a central cross set into a canted wall, which displays the names and regiments of the fallen. The cross has a faceted base, shaft, and arms. Flanking walls made of carstone have stone coping and include an inscription for the 1939-1945 war, along with appended plaques listing additional names.
