Description

Church House is a house dating from the early to mid-17th century. Originally a barn, it was later reused as Rectory House and given Gothic detailing in 1857. It is constructed of carstone with brick dressings and has a late 20th-century concrete pantiled roof. The house is of a two-storey lobby-entrance plan. A central, two-storey gabled porch is present, with brickwork at ground-floor level and carstone above. A 20th-century door has been inserted into the original arched opening, and a 20th-century window is on the first floor. There are 19th-century bargeboards to the gable. To the north are two 20th-century three-light casement windows set in brick dressed openings dating from around 1800. A gabled rectangular brick bay with a 20th-century casement window and 19th-century bargeboards is located to the south at ground floor. Blocked first-floor window openings from the 17th century remain, also brick dressed. The south gable has a distinctive arrangement of glazed bow windows across two floors and the gable itself, dating from around 1900. Semi-octagonal brick angle piers continue along the south-west wall, incorporating an arched gate and a further angle pier. The north gable has first-floor and attic windows with brick dressings, and exhibits purlin irons and a brick lozenge pattern.
