Description

The war memorial in St. Mary's Churchyard was built in 1919 and is made of Portland stone. It takes the form of a churchyard cross and stands approximately 3 metres high. The memorial features an octagonal stepped base topped by a cruciform pedestal, from which rises a moulded octagonal shaft. One face of the shaft is carved in low relief with a figure of an infantryman. Above this, the octagonal shaft of the cross displays a finely carved figure of Christ hanging from its arms, which are also octagonal. The figure is sheltered by an unusual gablet canopy with curving sides. Various inscription panels on the memorial commemorate those who fell in both World Wars. This detailed memorial is part of a group with the nearby Church of St. Mary.
