Description
The Church of St Mary is an early 15th-century church built of flint with stone dressings. The west tower dates from the 14th century and features angle buttresses, with carved animal figures on the lower offsets. It has a castellated parapet and an open lantern topped with a small lead spire, likely added in the early 19th century. The timber north porch, dating from the 14th century, includes large 2-light windows and a rib vault, and Nikolaus Pevsner suggests it may be the oldest timber porch in the county. The south porch, constructed around 1450 from Caen stone, boasts elaborate panelling and 4-light traceried windows. Inside, the church has arcades supported by quadrefoil shafted columns and moulded arches. The font, from the 15th century, features traceried panels, while the 17th-century font cover is a cupboard type with an ogee dome and painted interior. The octagonal pulpit is from the 18th century. The church is noted for its architectural, historical, and topographical significance.
