Description

The Hole in the Wall is a pair of cottages dating from 1750-51, built of red brick with stone dressings, and featuring plain tile roofs with stone coped gables and two brick ridge stacks. The cottages are linked by a central archway through which the road passes, and a projecting stable wing extends to the south.

The north elevation is symmetrical, arranged in five bays. The central archway is constructed with brick voussoirs, projecting stone imposts, and a keystone inscribed β€œAR 1751”. An originally blocked two-light square sectioned flush mullion window sits above the arch. Two two-light square sectioned flush mullion windows flank the arch on each side, appearing on both the ground and first floors.

The south elevation includes a 20th-century porch to the left of the archway and, to the right, a doorway with plain stone jambs and lintel, a 20th-century panelled door and a 20th-century casement window. Three two-light mullion windows are positioned above. The keystone to the arch is dated 1750.
