Description
The Walpole St Peter War Memorial is made of sandstone and is situated within St Peter’s Churchyard. It features a three-stepped base and an octagonal plinth, which supports a tapering octagonal shaft topped with a pinnacle of a Calvary cross set within a stone canopy. The base of the Calvary is adorned with carved figures, including a standing figure on either side of Christ on the front face, while the rear and sides depict additional figures, including St Michael and St George.
The memorial's plinth bears an inscription dedicated to those who fell in the First World War, reading "IN MEMORIAM 1914 – 1918." The other faces of the plinth list the names of the fallen. The top step of the base has an inscription that reads "THINK/ AND/ THANK" around it. The second step is inscribed with "1939 – 1945" on one face, while two other faces list names of the fallen, and another face is inscribed with a name followed by "KILLED IN NORTHERN IRELAND/ 1972."
