Description
The Barrow Gurney War Memorial is a village memorial dating from around 1920, with additions made after 1945. It is constructed from sandstone and features a hooded Calvary at the top, supported by an octagonal shaft that includes a statue of a knight standing behind a shield, set within a niche. The octagonal base rises above a plinth with three steep steps. Surrounding the memorial is a square enclosure with a stone kerb that appears to be original.
The north face serves as the principal front and faces the road. The Calvary has a gable with a brattished outline and a projecting, brattished ring at the top of the shaft. The carved figure of the knight, dressed in armour, is positioned in a niche about halfway up the shaft, which features a canopy with an ogee arch and crocketed finials. The shaft tapers to a square base with broach stops. The drum of the octagonal base has recessed panels on each side, displaying a quatrefoil with a richly-moulded square boss at the center. The north face bears the inscription in relief: ‘CHRIST.DIED / FOR.ALL.MEN / THESE.FOR / THEIR.COUNTRY’. The names of the fallen are engraved on the steps of the plinth, with those from the Second World War inscribed on the south face beneath the dates ‘1939 – 1945’. Each step has a cyma moulded lip.
