Description
Compton Mead is a terrace of cottages with a probable 17th century core, most notably marked by a datestone on No. 6 reading H/R/E/1690. The cottages were extensively restored between 1900 and 1927, with various dates incised above the doorways of each cottage. They feature colourwashed render and freestone dressings, with stone tiles on all roofs except No. 6, which has double Roman tiles and ashlar stacks. The layout is L-shaped, with Nos. 4, 5, and 6 running parallel to the road; No. 4 serves as the Barrow Gurney Post Office. Each cottage is two storeys high. The windows are 20th century with 2, 3, and 4-light ovolo mullions, small leaded pane casements, and hoodmoulds, while the upper windows are set in gabled dormers. All doorways are segmental-headed with studded plank and batten doors. There is a similar open courtyard entrance next to No. 5, which features three rectangular openings above and a wooden gate. A fine wrought iron lamp and sign adorn the Post Office. The cottages have tall ridge stacks and contribute significantly to the visual character of the village streetscape.
