BARROW GURNEY C.P. BARROW COURT LANE (west side) East and west corner Gazebos and linking north Boundary Wall of formal garden at Barrow Court
G.V. II*
2 Gazebos and balustraded Garden Wall. Circa 1890 by F. Inigo Thomas. Rubble to Gazebo bases, either side of central arch and flanking curved walls, ashlar to piers, architectural features of Gazebos and Boundary Wall, stone slates to Gazebo roofs. Each Gazebo has a Venetian loggia on its south facade with ornamental keystone and further arched openings with curving steps up to each side giving access to a wooden settle-type seat. The ramped rear walls have piers with ball finials at either end; the Gazebos have egg and foliage friezes and pyramidal roofs with apex ball finials. The Boundary Wall is balustraded with ball finial piers at regular intervals and in the centre 2 tall Gatepiers with ball finials and low wooden 2-leaf gates. 2 sections of balustrading to the east have (September 1985) been breached and the balusters lie in heaps in the east Gazebo. These architectural features together with several others comprise a fine formal garden layout designed by Thomas for Henry Martin Gibbs; it is included in the Historic Gardens Register : Part 1 Avon. (Country Life, 18 January 1902, R. Cooke, West Country Houses, 1957).
