Description

The east and west corner gazebos and the linking north boundary wall of the formal garden at Barrow Court were built around 1890 by F. Inigo Thomas. The bases of the gazebos are constructed from rubble, with ashlar used for the piers and architectural features of both the gazebos and the boundary wall. The roofs of the gazebos are covered with stone slates. Each gazebo features a Venetian loggia on its south facade, complete with an ornamental keystone and additional arched openings. Curving steps on either side provide access to a wooden settle-type seat. The ramped rear walls have piers topped with ball finials, and the gazebos are adorned with egg and foliage friezes and pyramidal roofs, also topped with apex ball finials. The boundary wall is balustraded, with ball finial piers at regular intervals and two tall gatepiers with ball finials at the center, leading to low wooden two-leaf gates. As of September 1985, two sections of balustrading to the east have been breached, with the balusters lying in heaps in the east gazebo. These architectural features, along with several others, form a fine formal garden layout designed by Thomas for Henry Martin Gibbs, which is included in the Historic Gardens Register: Part 1 Avon.
