Description
The gatepiers, gates, and a series of 12 pillars forming the west boundary wall of the formal garden at Barrow Court were created around 1890 by F. Inigo Thomas. This structure, collectively known as the Twelve Months of the Year, features rubble at the base of curving quadrant walls that create a semi-circular enclosure, topped with ashlar coping, gatepiers, and piers, as well as ironwork railings.
On either side of the central gatepiers, there are six terms, each 2 meters high, with moulded bases that develop into the bust of a woman representing a month of the year. The name of each month is carved in letters below each bust, which is adorned with foliage sprays. The tall gatepiers rise to 3 meters and are decorated with moulded cornices and elaborate swagged urn finials. The railings feature winged lions at the abutments, with simple railings between the 12 months and ornate two-leaf gates that include Tijou-inspired wrought iron lyre panels.
This impressive feature extends into the neighboring civil parish of Flax Bourton and is part of a carefully designed formal garden layout by Thomas for Henry Martin Gibbs. It is also included in the Historic Gardens Register: Part 1 Avon.
