Description
Townsend House is a house dated 1735, constructed of brick with slate roofs, featuring a double pile plan. It stands two storeys tall with an attic and has an irregular west front. The porch is located to the left of the centre and is supported by a pair of Tuscan columns. To the left of the porch, there is one 18th-century sash window with glazing bars beneath a gauged skewback arch, while a 20th-century casement window is to the right. On the first floor, there are two 20th-century sash windows, with the one on the right set within an 18th-century architrave. The house has a plain parapet below a gabled roof.
To the right, there is a later 18th-century two-storey extension that now features 20th-century details, topped with a gabled roof covered in black glazed pantiles. The rear of the house includes French doors to the right and a square window bay to the left, both of which are from the 20th century. A platband runs between the storeys. On the left side of the elevation, there are two 18th-century first-floor sash windows with glazing bars, balanced by two blind windows on the right. A central stack is visible in the roof slope.
The south gable has twin gable heads and tie plates shaped like the numerals 1 and 7, with a waterhead dated 1735. The north gable features a 20th-century canted bay window to the left and one sash window with glazing bars to the right. There are four 18th-century sashes on the first floor, all with glazing bars and beneath segmental heads. A platband is present at the eaves line, and there are two 18th-century sashes in the attic, also with glazing bars. The twin gable heads are separated by a brick parapet, with tie plates shaped like the numerals 3 and 5, indicating the construction date of 1735.
