Description
Dovecot Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 16th century, which was restored in 1930. It is constructed of brick and has pantiled roofs. The building has an F plan with twin cross wings that are now infilled and stands two storeys high. The south front features a plinth course and has two 2-light cross casements on the ground floor with leaded lights, and three similar casements on the first floor, with a set-off between the storeys. The gabled roof has a ridge stack located to the left of center, and a square stepped plinth supports four octagonal flues with moulded capitals and bases.
To the west, there is a projecting gabled cross wing, with the gable head resting on kneelers. This wing has a 5-light leaded cross casement on the ground floor and one 2-light cross casement on the first floor. The east return of the south range features three 2-light casements arranged on the sides and above a 4-centred door set within a square timber surround.
The west facade is two storeys high and consists of three bays. The central 4-centred door is framed by a doorcase with two orders of shafts and a deeply moulded arch. Above the door is a square hood mould on labels that is raised in the center to accommodate a plaque. This door has been restored. The fenestration includes 2-light cross casements as previously described, and the building has a gabled roof. An internal north gable stack has a square plinth that supports two octagonal flues with moulded capitals and bases.
To the north, there is a two-storey, three-bay extension that also features 2-light cross casements. Inside, the dining room has chamfered bridging beams and joists. The panelled drawing room, located in the main west wing, features reeded and fluted Ionic pilasters framing the fireplace and windows, with butted bridging beams and joists that are all chamfered. The stairwell is dado panelled and has a closed string staircase with balusters that are ball turned.
