Description
The Byker War Memorial is located in a small garden between Brian Roycroft Court and the Church of St Silas, which is also a listed building. The memorial features a hooded Calvary cross made of sandstone, standing approximately 5 meters tall. The cross shaft rises from an octagonal plinth that has a shallow cornice and a moulded foot. This plinth is set on a two-stepped base, with what was originally the lowest step now integrated into the garden paving.
The main dedicatory inscription on the front face of the plinth reads: "IN MEMORY OF/ THOSE WHO/ BROUGHT HONOUR/ TO THIS DISTRICT/ BY GIVING THEIR/ LIVES IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1919." The names of those commemorated are listed on the other faces of the plinth and on the moulded foot.
