Description
This listing describes three flats located in Byker, Newcastle upon Tyne, built between 1972 and 1975 by Ralph Erskine's Arkitektkontor, with Vernon Gracie as the site architect and structural engineering by White, Young and Partners. The buildings are constructed from pale metric modular brick and concrete block work on a concrete frame, featuring green and red timber-fronted balconies. They have metal roofs supported by plywood box beam purlins and stand three storeys tall on concrete stilts, with an open ground floor and ramps for access. There are stairs on the side covered by a plastic canopy, and a second-floor balcony also features a plastic canopy. The flats have timber windows with aluminium opening lights and timber doors with glazed panels, some of which have been renewed in hardwood. The interiors have not been inspected. This group of buildings forms a prominent feature in the centre of Kendal Street and represents the earliest part of the low-rise housing in the area.
