Description

This electricity sub-station is part of a terrace of houses built between 1974 and 1976 by Ralph Erskine's Arkitektkontor, with Vernon Gracie as the site architect and structural engineering by White, Young and Partners. The main contractor was Shepherd Construction. The buildings feature pale metric modular brick on a timber frame, with green and brown weatherboarding on the houses. The flats at Nos. 18-20, 31-33, and 38-40 are constructed from part reinforced concrete and concrete blocks, elevated over an open ground floor and clad in brick, with green and red-brown timber fronted balconies. All units have blue metal roofs supported by plywood box beam purlins. The design includes two-storey houses and three-storey flats.

Notable features include Nos. 62-66 Gordon Road, which have a red-brown bird box on the side and open timber porches at the front. Nos. 21-30 Brinkburn Street feature hoods over the front doors, while Nos. 31-33 have green balconies and storage areas on the ground floor beneath steps leading to first-floor entrances, along with a double-height timber balcony at the rear. No. 34 has yellow eaves at the rear and a catslide roof over the front porch. Nos. 38-40 are similar to the other flats but feature red-brown balconies. The buildings have timber windows with aluminium opening lights and timber doors with glazed panels, some of which have been replaced with hardwood.

The terrace backs onto Brinkburn Square, contributing to the group value of the area and continuing the unique style of enclosed squares characteristic of the Gordon Road neighbourhood. A small rectangular brick structure with a lean-to roof, which houses the original electricity sub-station, is located south of Nos. 38-40 Brinkburn Street.
