Description

The Whetstone (St Peter's Churchyard) War Memorial is a First World War memorial erected in 1921. It is located in the churchyard of the Grade I-listed Church of St Peter, positioned to the north of the church and along the path leading to the church entrance.

The memorial features a wooden Calvary cross topped with a canopy. On the south face of the cross is a large carved sculpture of Christ on the Cross. Above this, on the vertical arm of the cross, is a carved scroll displaying the monogram INRI in relief letters. The cross stands on a four-sided plinth made of Portland stone, which has a cap and a moulded cornice. This plinth is set atop a three-stepped square base constructed from Forest of Dean stone, with the lowest step being chamfered.

The plinth bears the main inscription and the names of the fallen in incised lettering. The inscription wraps around the upper part of the plinth on three faces, reading: "TO THE MEMORY OF THE" on the west face, "WHETSTONE MEN WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES" on the south face, and "IN THE WAR 1914 – 1918" on the east face. The lettering has weathered significantly over time. Below the inscription is a narrow moulded band, and the names of the 18 men who died are listed on the south face of the plinth. Additionally, there is another inscription on the south face of the uppermost step of the base that reads "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVER MORE." Some damage to the stonework has obscured parts of the words, and on the middle step, the letters R.I.P. are visible.
