Description
Whetstone Grange is a farmhouse built around 1800, with alterations made around 1870 and in the late 20th century. Some deeds suggest it was constructed in 1795. The building is made of red brick with a stucco finish on the main frontages, which was renewed in the 20th century. It features hipped roofs made of Swithland slate, with a central flat lead section and brick chimneys. The farmhouse is two storeys high and has a square plan, with three bays across the front and a service wing to the east, along with a further rear wing to the southwest.
The symmetrical front has a central stone Doric portico that covers a half-glazed margin stile door with an overlight, and there is a 6/6 sash window above. Each of the projecting side bays has a 6/6 sash window, although the left ground floor window has been reglazed in UPVC. The right side of the building has two similar sashes above, while the left side features a UPVC window and a lean-to projection that covers the cellar steps. The hipped rear wing has a blank wall facing east, and the rear elevation mainly consists of late 20th-century glazing, along with a small early 19th-century casement window in the attic. The eastern rear wing includes a two-storey canted bay window and doorway from around 1870, featuring late 19th-century and late 20th-century glazing. The southwest rear wing, which is in separate ownership, has a Welsh slate roof and unglazed late 20th-century windows.
Inside, the farmhouse retains its original staircase and landing, which features double stick balusters and a ramped scrolled hardwood handrail. The main ground floor rooms have cornices and one mid-19th-century marble fireplace. The rear service rooms have exposed joists and slate slab floors, with a thrawl remaining in situ. The cellars feature segmental brick vaults and wine bins, and most rooms are fitted with beaded 6-panel doors.
