Description
Barwick House is a farmhouse built in the mid-18th century, with alterations made to the rear in the late 19th century. The facade is made of red brick in a header bond pattern and features a black glazed pantile roof. The building is two storeys high, with three bays and six windows. The depth of the double pile has been largely altered at the rear.
On the south facade, there are four brick giant pilasters with moulded brick capitals and entablature blocks above. The outer bays on the ground floor have two late 19th-century plate glass sash windows set under flat rubbed brick arches. A central late 19th-century brick porch has a south window inserted and two returned windows. Above, there is a moulded brick platband on the first floor, which has six late 19th-century plate glass sash windows with glazing bars, also under flat rubbed brick arches. The eaves cornice is made of wood with modillion detailing, which is broken forward over the pilasters.
The hipped roof features three 18th-century wooden pedimented two-light casement windows. There are two central ridge stacks with brick pointed blank arches and stone imposts. A late 19th-century canted bow window has been added to the east return, along with a late 19th-century addition on the east that is aligned with the altered rear pile. The late 19th-century additions to the west and north are not considered of special interest.
Barwick House was built by Robert Glover, who also constructed the stable and carriage blocks, as well as Barmer Farm barn and Ivy Farm barn in Stanhoe.
