Description

Stanhoe and Barwick War Memorial is located at The Green, immediately north-east of the pond. It comprises a three-stage stone pillar, rectangular on plan, dying back from the lower to upper stage by small intervals. The upper stage is capped. The memorial is enclosed by four low, pyramidal, posts carrying pairs of horizontal metal rails.

The principal dedicatory inscription to the front face of the upper stage reads THIS MEMORIAL IS/ ERECTED IN HONOUR/ OF THE INHABITANTS/ OF STANHOE & BARWICK/ WHO SERVED IN THE/ GREAT WAR 1914-1918. Below, on the middle stage, the inscription continues AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THESE/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES THEREIN/ (20 NAMES)/ 1939 – 1945/ (3 NAMES). To either side, further lists of names are recorded below the inscription THOSE WHO SERVED.
