Description

The Stoke Goldington and Gayhurst War Memorial is made of Portland stone and is located on the green area at the junction of Westside Lane and High Street, near several Grade II-listed buildings. The memorial features a two-stepped square base topped with a square-sectioned tapering plinth that has incised inscription panels. An octagonal cross shaft with a moulded foot and collar supports the wheel-head cross, which has carved flower heads at the ends of its arms.

The main dedicatory inscription on the front (east) face of the plinth reads: "THIS MEMORIAL WAS ERECTED BY THE INHABITANTS OF STOKE GOLDINGTON AND GAYHURST IN MEMORY OF THEIR HEROES WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR. 1914-1919. WORLD WAR. 1939-1945." The names of those commemorated are listed on the north and west sides, organized by year of death. An additional inscription on the south side states: "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN, THAN THIS. THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIEND."
