Toll Gate Lodge

Toll Gate Lodge is an early 19th-century picturesque cottage constructed of half-timber and brick. It was formerly known as Ridge Lane Lodge to the Cassiobury estate and is illustrated in Britton's Account of Cassiobury from 1837. The building features an unusual plan originally designed for two families, divided horizontally with an external stair. It is two storeys high with a fish-scale tiled roof, half-hipped gables on the north and south sides, and a central brick chimney. The cottage has two windows on the front, with applied half-timbering on the first floor and fish-scale tile-hanging in the gables. There is a small projecting oriel window on the first floor and a larger bay window on the ground floor at the south end, both with fish-scale tiled roofs. A later lean-to addition has been added along the east wall, and the roof is covered with plain tiles.
