Description
The Watford Tunnel, south entrance to the west tunnel, is a Grade II listed structure built in 1837 as part of the original tunnel for the London-Birmingham Railway, designed by engineer Robert Stephenson. The entrance features a round-headed archway with a classical facade, channelled rustication, moulded imposts, and a heavy dentil cornice topped with a plain pediment. The side abutments are made of brick and also have a dentil cornice extending over them. The tunnel itself is over a mile long, and it is noted that ten men lost their lives during its construction.
