Description
Sugden House is a detached house built in 1956 for Derek and Jean Sugden, designed by Alison and Peter Smithson. Jean Sugden also designed and planted the garden. The house is constructed of second-hand London stock bricks, with a nine-inch brick crosswall frame and exposed reinforced concrete beams. The roof is tiled.
The house is square in plan, incorporating a garage to the north-east. It is a two-storey building with a catslide roof over the single-storey garage and an enclosed yard. Two ridge stacks are present. All windows are metal casements. The near-symmetrical front elevation faces south-west and overlooks the garden, featuring a garden door to the right, a large central window, and a smaller window to the former playroom to the left. Above, at the first floor, are two inverted 'L'-shaped windows. The south-east and north-west elevations have a more irregular fenestration. The garage door and entrance are on the south-east elevation; a large, stepped window lies to the left of the entrance, lighting the dining area. At the first floor, another inverted 'L'-shaped window and two rectangular lights are positioned at the apex of the roof over the stairs. On the north-west elevation, the yard has been glazed, and a door leads from the former playroom to the garden, with a large window to the left.
The interior features a semi-open plan on the ground floor, with room divisions formed by cupboards and curtains, separating the dining space, living room, and kitchen. Exposed brick crosswalls and Columbian pine joists are visible in the ceiling. The living room is higher, allowing steps up to the master bedrooms directly above on the first floor. Underfloor heating by Benhams is overlaid by Loliondo teak strip floors in the living room and playroom, and polyvinyl tiling in the dining room, hall, and kitchen. A brick fireplace with a concrete lintel and tiled surround is in the living room. Service rooms run along the length of the garage wall, accessible from the dining area; at the first floor, this linear space is used for storage. A first-floor open staircase, designed by Alison Smithson, has simple stick balusters. The rooms on the first floor have french-polished Columbian matchboard ceilings and tongue-and-groove boarding to the floors.
Original doors, door furniture, light switches, and fittings remain throughout. Cupboards and shelving designed by Alison Smithson are incorporated into the living room, kitchen, and master bedrooms.
