Description
Tolpits House is a house, now divided into multiple residences, dating from the 18th century. It was raised, extended, and altered in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of red brick and features a shallow hipped slate roof. It has three bays and three storeys, although it was originally two storeys. The front of the house includes a late 19th-century ground floor addition, with a rendered Doric surround and a pediment framing the entrance, along with margin lights. To the left of the entrance is a French window, and to the right is a sash window. The upper storey features sash windows with cambered heads, with the first floor centre window being larger than the smaller second-floor windows. There is a plat band at the second floor level and oversailing brick courses below the boxed eaves.
On the right side of the house, there is a stack and two bays behind it on the right return, which includes a secondary entrance. The left return has a stack and two bays, along with an early 19th-century ground floor verandah that has been glazed. At the rear, there is a second-floor round-headed stair window and blind windows, as well as two-storey extensions featuring a canted bay. Inside, there is an early 19th-century staircase with barley-twist balusters and early 19th-century fireplace surrounds.
