Description

Apsley House is a house, originally dating from the 18th century, and extended in the 19th and 20th centuries. It has been divided into two separate dwellings. The house is constructed of vitreous brick with red dressings, topped by a gabled slate roof. It is two storeys and an attic in height, with a splayed plinth, a moulded brick cornice, a vitreous brick parapet, two small flat lead roof dormers, and flanking chimneys. The front has five bays. The first-floor windows are segmental-headed sashes with raised brick aprons and guttae (small, decorative projections) at the outer corners. On the ground floor, to the right of the front, is a sash window aligned with the upper window above, and to the left of the doorway is a tripartite sash window aligned with the second window from the left. The doorway has an eared architrave, a small pulvinated frieze (a curved, convex moulding), a dentilled and bracketed cornice, and a pediment; the original door has been removed and replaced with two 20th-century doors. A one-bay extension dating from the early 19th century is set back on the right-hand side, featuring sash windows. The glazing bars of the sash windows have been altered, and an old insurance plaque is located on the first floor, in the centre. A 20th-century extension has been added to the rear.
