Description
West End Farm is a farmhouse that has been converted into a private house. It dates back to the 16th century or earlier and originally featured an open hall house with an east crosswing. Around 1600, a floor and chimney were added to the hall, and the building underwent renovations with a brick casing on the front in the late 19th century. A convincing traditional timber-framed northwest rear wing was added in the 20th century, which incorporates an older stair tower. The timber frame is cased in painted brick, while the rear extension has an exposed timber frame. The house has steep old red tile roofs, hipped at the single-storey extension on the east end. It is two storeys tall and three windows wide, facing south. The gabled east wing projects out to the rear, and there is a large internal chimney located a third of the way from the west end, with a lobby entrance plan. To the left of the entrance, there are two-light casement windows on each floor, while the right side and the wing feature three-light casements. Inside, the house has exposed timbers, a clasped-purlin roof with collars and long curved wind-braces, straight tension braces in the walls, and moulded plank doors. Ovolo moulded windows were inserted in place of older ones around 1600.
