Description
Green Farm, now a private house, is a farmhouse dating back to the 16th century, with significant alterations in the late 16th century and the 18th century. The original structure was an open hall house, to which a west wing and a floor were added in the late 16th century. The front of the house was heightened and re-faced with red brick, including some blue bricks, in the later 18th century. It is timber-framed and has a steep roof covered in old red tiles. The west wing has a half-hipped rear and a gable at the front, while the front slope of the hall range is flatter due to the heightened eaves. The house is L-shaped and faces south, set back beyond its barn, with four windows on the first floor. The windows are small-paned casements with segmental arches. A bow window is located to the left of the entrance, which has a panelled recessed door under a segmental arch. Two windows are situated to the right. The entrance features a cross-passage behind the hall fireplace, with a staircase situated beyond the passage to the north of the stack. The west wing contains a large internal chimney with a floor supported by a single axial beam to the south, but two beams to the north. The rear wallplate of the hall displays an edge halved scarf joint and mortises suggesting a previous 6-light diamond mullioned window in the west bay. An elaborate moulded beam supports the hall floor, featuring ogee mouldings and a large central roll. The fireplace lintel is moulded with hollows and roll details.
