Description

Pickerings Cottage at Pickerings Farm is a house dating from the early 17th century for the northern part and around 1700 for the southern part. The northern section is timber framed with a roughcast upper floor and a panelled brick ground floor, while the southern part is a taller block made of red brick in Flemish bond. The house has steep old red tile roofs and is irregularly shaped, standing two stories high and facing west.

The northern part was originally a single-cell building featuring a large external south gable chimney, with one window on each floor and a gable entrance. This section was later incorporated into a larger southern extension, which has a lobby entrance at the north end of the west front leading to a staircase next to the older chimney stack. The southern extension contains one large room on each floor, with an internal south gable chimney and closets on either side. The west front of this part features a plat band and a wooden eaves cornice, with three-light casement windows on each floor set under segmental arches. The southern gable has a moulded brick parapet and a moulded corbel at the corner, along with small blocked windows beside the chimney for the closets.

Inside the older northern part, the upper room has jowled posts and a side-purlin roof. There is also a painted black letter inscription on the wall plate at the southern part of the eastern wall, which reads, "they that [bu]ilt in the land, Shalbeas ..../....oyed, but abideth for ever. The rist shall live by his faith. 1614."
