Description
Standing Back is a house that dates from the 17th century or earlier, with the eastern wing being brick cased in the early 18th century, marked '1703' on the brick. The western part has a brick front added in the 19th century. The building features a timber frame that is roughcast at the rear and on the western end, with red and blue brick casing on the eastern part in Flemish bond and red brick casing on the western part. It has steep old red tile roofs and is a long, narrow structure set back from the road, facing north.
The western part is two bays wide and two stories tall, designed with an internal chimney lobby-entry plan. It has two windows on each floor and a boarded battened door located between the windows, leading into a tiled lean-to porch at the left bay. The windows are flush two-light casements with leaded glazing, with three lights to the left of the door. The eastern part is one and a half stories high, consisting of three bays with swept dormers at the eaves—one at the front and two at the rear. There is a three-light casement window on the north side and iron wall anchors for a cross-beam located a third of the way from the western end. A chimney is positioned at the western end against the western block.
