Description

The Maiden's Head Public House is a building of likely 18th-century or earlier origin, documented as the Queen’s Head in 1774 and altered in the 19th century. It is constructed of red brick, potentially enclosing a timber frame. The front elevation is roughcast with applied half-timbering to the first floor, and the roof is steep with old red tiles, the main part being hipped. The building is a long, two-storey structure with a cellar, set back from the road facing north. A lower two-storey wing extends to the east. The eastern bay of the main range has ground-floor and first-floor levels concealed by the uniform roofline. The north front has a central entrance up four steps, leading to a gabled trellis porch. There are four windows to the ground floor, with three-light small-pane casements. Two-light lower windows are present to the eastern bay and a similar window sits under the eaves. Two gabled dormers light the first floor. The eastern wing features a small, two-light flush casement window on the first floor and a half-glazed, five-panel door. A cellar flap is located under the western window of the front elevation. The interior includes axial chamfered beams and large rear wall chimneys extending to two bays east of the entrance. The building is included on the list for its group value.
