Description

Old Hill Farm is a house dating from the 17th century, originally featuring a hall range that was jettied at the front. It includes a west crosswing built in the mid to late 17th century, with 18th-century brick underbuilding for the jetty casing on the ground floor of the wing, as well as an eastern end and rear extension to the wing. The building has exposed timber framing on the first floor, a red brick ground floor, and remnants of roughcast on the eastern end. It is topped with steep old red tile roofs and is an L-shaped, two-storey house facing north.

The hall range consists of two unequal structural bays with axial floor beams and a former continuous front jetty. The entrance is now located on the eastern side of the larger west bay, which features a large chimney that was formerly external on the west gable, with a rear door opposite. There is evidence of stair trimming in the northwest corner of the smaller eastern bay. A second chimney, added to the back of the west stack, serves the crosswing, which is a single large bay built to the west without a jetty, allowing space in front and behind the joint stack for a potential lobby entry and stair.

The northern front has three windows on each floor, featuring three-light flush casement windows with divided panes. The door is centrally located in the hall range, and a large cruciform chimney rises above the roof. The interior showcases exposed structural timbers, with the hall range displaying jowled posts, straight tension braces on the walls, and axial floor beams. The crosswing also has jowled posts, similar long tension braces on the walls, and a clasped-purlin roof on the gable truss with a collar.
