Description
Mabbs Farmhouse is a farmhouse that has been converted into a private house. It dates from the mid-16th century, with an early 17th-century rear wing to the northeast and a similar wing from the late 17th century on the west side. The front of the house is cased in brick from the 18th or 19th century, while the rear part was renovated and tile-hung around 1975. The structure features a timber frame on a brick sill, with brick infill and tile-hanging at the rear, but the front is made of red brick. The house has steep old red tile roofs and two internal chimneys.
It is a long, one-and-a-half-storey building facing south, with three windows, three dormers, and a tiled gabled porch supported by two posts. The windows are two-light flush casements with small panes, and there is a stable-type door leading to the kitchen at the right-hand end of the front. The timber lintels have segmental relieving arches.
Inside, the house has a six-bay timber frame with jowled posts, straight braces, cambered tie beams, and a clasped purlin roof with straight wind braces. There are sockets for a three-light diamond mullioned glazed window in the ground floor of the rear wall. The northeast rear wing also has jowled posts and a clasped purlin roof, while the adjoining rear wing features a butt purlin roof. On the first floor, there are two two-panel moulded doors. The room on the east side of the central chimney has exposed chamfered axial and cross beams, and generally, there are exposed beams and joists throughout the house.
