Description
The Lodge is a 1½ storey building located on Hempstead Road in Bovingdon, originally serving as the lodge for Westbrook Hay and now functioning as a private house. A plaque on the south gable indicates it was built in 1851 for the Ryder family. The structure features uncoursed flint and puddingstone with red brick dressings and a red tile roof adorned with scalloped tile bands. This picturesque double lodge, formerly known as the Upper Lodge, was intended for the gatekeeper, with the gamekeeper's house located at the rear. It has recessed cross windows with ovolo moulded wood mullions and lattice leaded casements, along with decorative pierced and cusped bargeboards. The door details are reminiscent of G.G. Scott's church at Flaunden, built in 1838. An elaborate gabled timber porch faces the drive to the east, featuring a large carved coat of arms in the gable and Jacobethan detailing on the four-centred arched doorway. Gabled dormers rise through the eaves.
