Description

The Ryder Memorial is a wellhouse built in 1881 by W. White FSA for the Ryder family. It is a small, timber-framed structure with a red brick plinth and blue brick chamfered offsets. The roof is steeply pitched and covered in shingles, topped with a wrought iron finial. The design incorporates Medieval detailing, with moulded wooden corner piers and curved braces extending to the eaves. The structure sits on an oak sill and chamfered brick plinth. An inscription on the wallplate commemorates Granville D Ryder, born in 1799 and died in 1879, and explains that the wellhouse was raised for the use and comfort of friends and villagers. The inscription incorporates a biblical quotation from John 4:14. The well itself has been covered over.
