Description

The Bell Public House is an early 18th-century house, with alterations from the early 19th century and rear extensions built in 1982. It is constructed of painted brick and has a steep roof covered with old red tiles. The south gable was likely timber-framed and plastered. Originally a three-room wide house arranged internally around a central chimney stack, with the lobby entrance positioned a third of the way from the north end. The entrance is now into the south room, which is at a lower level than the rest of the building. A narrow, two-storey parallel extension runs along the rear, with a roughcast upper floor and a steep, old red tile roof that doesn't extend significantly north of the main chimney. A rear, lateral, external chimney in the north part of the building is now capped. Inside, a wide fireplace with a timber lintel and oven in the east jamb is present, along with chamfered axial beams on the ground floor, and exposed studs, wall plates, and purlins on the first floor.
