Description

The East Barn at Preston Hill is a 17th-century barn constructed with a timber frame resting on a low brick sill. It is finished with dark weatherboarding and features a steeply pitched roof that has been slated. The barn has five tall bays and faces west, with a central gabled porch. Architectural details include jowled posts and long curved braces supporting cambered tie-beams. The roof is a clasped-purlin design, with one purlin on each slope supported by inclined straight queen-posts. There is a strainer between the purlins at the mid-bay. The walls have mid-height rails that are jointed in-line, with straight tension braces at the corners. Additionally, there are winnowing doors located in the middle bay, both above and below the mid-height rail. The structure features face-halved bladed scarf joints over the posts.
