4/86 South Barn at - Old Wellbury

Barn. Early/mid C17. Timber frame, on brick sill plastered externally, dark weatherboarded, with a steep pitched roof now slated. A tall, wide-span, 3-bays barn facing N, with a low lean-to porch in middle. Pitching doors in side bays on S side. Hollow moulded chin to jowls of posts, long curved braces to cambered tie-beams. Mid-bay posts with staggered mid-height rails. Similar in end gables. Long straight tension braces from corner posts and in middle bay. Clasped-purlin roof with 2 purlins to each slope. Upper purlin carried on a high collar, lower purlin carried on a low collar in the end gables but on inclined queen-posts between. Face-halved bladed scarf joints in wallplates.
