Description

The South Barn at Old Wellbury is a barn dating from the early to mid-17th century. It features a timber frame built on a brick sill, with an exterior that is plastered and dark weatherboarded. The barn has a steeply pitched roof that is now covered with slate. It is a tall, wide-span structure with three bays, facing north, and includes a low lean-to porch in the middle. There are pitching doors located in the side bays on the south side.

Architectural details include hollow moulded chin to jowls of the posts, long curved braces leading to cambered tie-beams, and mid-bay posts with staggered mid-height rails, which are also found in the end gables. The barn features long straight tension braces from the corner posts and in the middle bay. The roof is constructed with clasped purlins, having two purlins on each slope. The upper purlin is supported by a high collar, while the lower purlin is held by a low collar in the end gables, resting on inclined queen-posts in between. The wallplates are joined with face-halved bladed scarf joints.
