Description
The Big Barn at Corneybury is an early 17th-century barn constructed with a timber frame and weatherboarded exterior, featuring a steeply pitched roof that is half-hipped at the east and now covered with slate. This five-bay aisled barn faces south and includes a gabled central porch at the south with double doors located on the rear wall opposite. The structure is supported by heavy square jowled arcade posts that rest on spur sill-walls, with long curved braces extending to cambered tie-beams. Aisle-ties are also present, featuring curved braces from the jowled wall-posts. The roof is designed with clasped purlins, collars, and one purlin on each slope. The arcade plates over the posts are joined with face-halved bladed scarf joints. Additionally, spaced battens are installed under the eaves to allow for ventilation. There is a 20th-century shed attached to the south, which is not considered of special interest.
