Description
Two houses, numbers 84 and 86 High Street, were built around 1710. A matching extension to the north (number 86) was likely added circa 1900. The houses are constructed of red brick with blue headers, featuring a projecting wooden eaves cornice and a steep, old red tile hipped roof. They are two storeys high with a cellar and attic, originally designed in a symmetrical Queen Anne style, with a five-window facade and a narrower, one-window extension to the north (number 86). The houses have end chimneys and a central entrance plan, with later additions at the rear and to the north.
The front of the building now has four box dormers in the roof slope and a bold, modillioned cornice extended over the northern section. The windows are flush-box sashes with 6/6 panes, set within red rubbed brick arches. A floor band and chamfered plinth extend over the northern section. The main doorcase features elaborately carved foliate trusses with a cut-back hood, sheltering a half-glazed door and a fanlight. A door to the north end is accessed by two steps. A 6-panel flush-beaded door with a deep, moulded flat hood on shaped brackets provides access to number 86.
The interior has been altered, but retains a good cornice and a corner fireplace in the southwest room on the ground floor.
