Description
Old Wellbury is a house comprising an early 17th century east crosswing and north range, with a brick front range added around 1700. The building is timber-framed at the rear, with red brick infill, roughcast, or brick casing elsewhere. It has steep old red tile roofs; the rear range’s roof slopes down over a catslide outshut to the rear northeast.
The house is an irregular two-and-a-half storeys facing south, with a gabled crosswing on the east side of the front and a lower, older rear range projecting westward. The rear range incorporates a large internal chimney with back-to-back fireplaces aligned with the front entrance. A large external chimney is present on the east side of the crosswing, and an internal west gable chimney on the brick front range. The south front has three upper windows to the brick section, with a plat band and a plaster cove at the eaves, and one window to the crosswing with lower eaves. A gabled dormer is on the roof slope. A four-light window is to the left of the front door, and a canted bay window is to the wing. Two-light cross casement windows are on the first floor, and casements elsewhere. A flat hood shelters the panelled front door. Four bays of timber frame are exposed at the rear of the rear wing. The crosswing has a clasped-purlin roof. The brick wing contains one room and a stair hall, featuring moulded balusters to the stair with an unusual flat-topped rail.
