Description
East Barn at New Wellbury Farm is a 17th-century barn constructed with a timber frame resting on a red brick sill in English bond. It is dark weatherboarded and features a steeply pitched half-hipped roof, currently covered with corrugated iron but originally thatched with thin spars. The barn is tall and consists of six bays, which are used as two separate three-bay barns, facing west. There is a later partition in the middle that does not have a masonry sill. The barn has swept jowls on the posts, long curved braces supporting cambered tie-beams, and a mid-height rail that is tenoned in line. The clasped-purlin roof includes one purlin on each slope, supported by slightly inclined queen-posts that thicken at the head, with splayed scarf joints to the purlin. There are slots for wind-braces that are now missing, and the wallplate next to the post features face-halved bladed scarf joints. Additionally, there are small winnowing doors on the east side in the second bay from each end.
