Description

South View and West View are two houses that were originally a workhouse, dating from the 17th century and altered with a new front in the late 19th century. The building features a timber frame with roughcast on a renewed red brick sill and has applied half-timbering on the south front. It has a steep red tile roof and is L-shaped, facing south with a large west gable that includes an 18th-century external chimney. There is also an internal chimney on the east gable. Each floor has two windows, with the right-hand windows set in a canted two-storey bay. These are three-light flush casements with small panes and pointed top lights above a transom with tiny panes. At the northeast, there is a two-storey rear gabled wing. Access to South View is through an entrance in the east gable, while West View has its entrance in a single-storey west extension set back at the western end. The interior features a heavy oak frame with axial beams and a straight brace from a jowled post to a tie beam. It is likely that the house originally had three bays with a full-height close-studded partition between the middle and west bays.
