Description

The North and East barn ranges at Westbury Farm alongside School Lane are 17th-century structures with alterations made to the roofs of the northern range in the 19th century. They feature a timber frame on a low brick sill, dark weatherboarding, and steeply pitched roofs, with the eastern range now covered in corrugated asbestos and the northern range slated. The southern barn is a four-bay, single-aisled barn facing west, characterized by jowled posts, straight braces to the tie-beams and arcade plate, and a mid-height rail in the walls that is tenoned in-line. It has a clasped-purlin roof with two purlins on each slope, the upper purlin resting on a high collar in each truss and the lower on inclined straight queen-posts. The aisle on the west side has been rebuilt with a higher wall, a flatter-pitched slated roof, and double doors, likely replacing the original gabled porch. The lower northern barn has two aisles, with the western aisle rebuilt similarly to the other barn, featuring some stepped and some swept jowls on pairs of arcade posts, curved braces to the tie-beams, and an edge-halved scarf joint in the wallplate. It has a single clasped purlin on each slope supported by inclined straight queen-posts. The long northern range adjoins a similar structure, but its roof structure was renewed at a steep pitch in the 19th century.
