Description

The north-west barn range at Offley Hoo is a 17th-century structure consisting of a series of barns. It features timber frames resting on red brick sills laid in English bond and is covered with dark weatherboarding. The barns have steeply pitched slate roofs and comprise a tall range of ten bays facing east into a yard.

The southern part of the barn has three bays, which includes a gabled projecting east porch and opposed doors located in the third bay from the south. This section displays jowled posts, long straight braces, unjowled posts in the mid-bay, and a mid-height rail that is jointed in-line. Each slope of the roof is supported by two clasped purlins, carried on a high collar and inclined queen-posts.

The middle section consists of two bays with jowled posts, mid-bay posts, and a mid-height rail that is jointed in-line on the east side but staggered on the west. This area also features heavy stepped jowls and two clasped purlins on each slope, supported by a high collar with V-struts.

The northern part of the barn has five bays and includes another projecting gabled east porch with opposed double doors in the third bay from the north. This section is narrower, with its eastern face aligned with the southern part. It has jowled posts, unjowled mid-bay posts, and mid-height rails that are in-line, along with tension braces extending down to the rail. Long straight braces support slender tie-beams, some of which are re-used. Each slope of the roof has a single clasped purlin, carried on a collar with inclined queen-struts. The brick sill in this section is higher, and there is a weatherboarded lean-to on the east side situated between the two porches.
