Description
The West Barn at Great Offley House is a 17th-century barn that has been converted into a party room. It features a timber frame resting on a red brick sill, with the frame exposed and infilled with red brick. The barn has a steep old red tile roof that extends over the rear aisle. It is a tall structure with four bays, facing east into the yard behind the house. The barn includes casement windows and glazed doors, with steps leading down into the interior. Notable architectural details include jowled posts and a mid-height rail that is jointed in-line, long straight tension braces, and curved braces connecting to the arcade plate of the rear aisle. The roof is supported by long curved braces to the tie-beams, which hold a clasped-purlin roof with two purlins on each slope. High collars support the upper purlin, while inclined queen-posts support the lower purlin. Aisle tie-beams also support inclined queen-posts leading to the aisle purlin. The barn was renovated in the late 20th century.
